English Composition and Research Summary Essay September 30, 2015 Gender Beauty Standards Women set themselves to a higher beauty standard than men. According to Barry, most men form an image of what they care to look like early on in their life and stick to the image that they feel is good enough, women on the other hand are constantly changing their “look”. They set higher beauty standards for themselves than men do; women look at themselves and critique every little thing that does not add up to the standard they have for themselves. Secondly, Barry talks about how women spend to much of their time perfecting the image they have of the “Barbie” look. When women were little, they played with barbies and got this self image of what they should look like in their head, when in reality being seven feet tall and weigh 81 pounds is difficult to live up to and make yourself look healthy. Also, Barry mentions the multibillion cosmetic industry and he compares men to women in that men would never spend that much time or money trying to make themselves more appealing. Men half of the time do not notice the beauty efforts women put into getting ready anyway. Barry mentions in his passage that men do not compare themselves to the normal standards, they are fine with being “average”. In conclusion, Barry compares the standards to which men and women compare themselves to the “traditional beauty standards”. |
